As a result of the persistent issue of falling masonry, CADW commissioned a detailed condition survey of all the stonework of the main Abbey. This involved complex planning and the use of a 38 metre MEWP. Observations were recorded on images taken from 3D scans of the structure. The report on the results of the survey included archive information on previous repairs, investigations into the stone, mortar analysis and conclusions as to the mains causes of decay.
Subsequent to that report, OCC drew up recommendations for treatment including micro-pinning using basalt pins, stone replacement and soft capping. These proposals were then developed into a specification and schedule of works for tendering and procurement. Work started in 2024 and will complete in 2029; OCC have been appointed as technical consultants for the five phases of the work.
